“Collaboration is crucial. It's how busy, smart people get more done. When we collaborate with others, we can leverage each other’s strengths to provide more to our community. Collaboration works best when you are already clear on your own strengths, weaknesses and goals. Because then when you encounter someone, or an organization, who compliments your skillset and shares your identified goals…successful collaboration is much more likely.
Forced collaborations are not ideal. The best collaborations are similar to partnerships in that both parties share a common desired outcome and some ‘stake in the game’. If only one party has something to loose or little to gain, what is their motivation to help you succeed?
Ideally, you also respect and enjoy each other’s company. I mention this, as you will probably be spending significant time and energy with this individual or organization; so sharing common beliefs and principles is essential to collaborative success.”
